Compressed Natural Gas-Fueled Refuse Haulers PDF Print E-mail

WM Refuse haulerProject Overview:
The inhalation of diesel emissions can trigger adverse health problems, including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation and congestion and can worsen bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. Emissions from older diesel trucks can contribute to air pollution by producing particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that can be harmful to not only the driver, but also to the surrounding communities and environment.

In 2012, Leonardo Academy was awarded a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program to assist two Midwest refuse haulers in replacing older diesel vehicles with new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

  • Waste Management is the leading provider of waste management services in North America.  With 21,000 collection and transfer vehicles, the company has the largest trucking fleet in the waste industry. For this project, Waste Management replaced two diesel refuse haulers providing residential service throughout Racine County, Wisconsin with CNG alternatives.
  • Advanced Disposal conducts waste hauling services throughout the eastern United States and the Bahamas.  Providing services to over 250,000 commercial customers and 2.4 million residential customers, Advanced Disposal has over 2,900 trucks operating daily.  For this project, Advanced Disposal replaced two diesel refuse haulers operating in Dane County, Wisconsin, with CNG vehicles.
