Sustainability Accomplishments for 2011
It has been a very productive year for Leonardo Academy as we continue to help drive sustainability into practice on many fronts. We made progress on advancing sustainability for buildings, organizations, events, agriculture, emissions, gaming, fire suppression, land management and more. Our key programs include: sustainability training, sustainability standards development, diesel emissions reduction financing in coordination with federal and state programs, sustainable land management, and helping organizations, companies, families and individuals to advance sustainability.

Please consider making a yearend donation to support Leonardo Academy's work on advancing sustainability. Leonardo Academy is a charitable nonprofit so your donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Your donations help us to do more to advance sustainability and to address the many sustainability challenges the earth faces.
There is an old saying (variously attributed), "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." It really works both ways. The bottom line is we are all responsible for making the earth a better place for the present and for the future. Please support Leonardo Academy's work on addressing earth's environmental and sustainability challenges to give future generations a world full of progress and hope.

Celebrating 10 Years of Partnership with Greenbuild
Leonardo Academy John Landowski and Jessica Loeper staffing our booth at the 2011 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Toronto, Ontario, Canada last October.
Last October, for the tenth consecutive year, Leonardo Academy participated at the 2011 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Toronto, Ontario. We had a booth at the Expo and hosted our annual Sustainability and Existing Building Community Celebration.
It also marked the tenth year that Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® Program has calculated the emissions for Greenbuild and certified the level of emissions offsets achieved.
Greenbuild was another great green gathering of every imaginable practitioner affecting the health and sustainability of our cities and buildings across the globe. There were over 200 education and master sessions, summits and site tours. Some of the highlights included many sessions on the launch of new LEED rating systems including LEED-Healthcare and preparations for the release of LEED 2012.
Update on Leonardo Academy Programs
We continue to expand our course offerings and added an on-demand version of our LEED® Green Associate Training. This Leonardo Academy course covers the key knowledge areas for the LEED Green Associate exam and the information needed to be an effective participant in the green building marketplace. The on-demand version provides the flexibility to take training at one's own pace.
Other on-demand trainings include Waste Management and Sustainable Procurement Strategies, both AIA/CES and USGBC approved for continuing education credit. Free on-demand trainings include Introduction to Green Leasing, Credentialing Maintenance Made Easy, and 123 LEED-NC Certification.
Corporate training is also in full swing. This year we conducted corporate training for clients in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, and plan to head back to DC this January. For more info:
Website Developments (WorldGreen.org)
It has been a very exciting year for World Green. Our community has grown dramatically-readership increased by 800%! We hope to release our first two mobile applications at the end of this year, including a news reader and a geo-location based app.
The World Green community also has been busy publishing blog articles on various sustainability-related topics, including an in-depth look at Atmospheric Oxygen Depletion, Climate Change and Food Production, Building Materials, Toxin Free School Supplies and Biomimicry.
This year Leonardo Academy continued to advance sustainability with work in all of the areas covered in this newsletter. See our exciting progress in each program area update!
Leonardo Academy is working to green more events with its Cleaner and Greener® Sustainable Event Program through our connections at event venues and event managing organizations. As part of the program we inventory the emissions caused by events, help event organizers to identify emissions offsets, assess the level of sustainability achieved, and certify the events. We help events increase the sustainability of exhibiting using the Cleaner and Greener Sustainable Exhibitor Scorecard to increase awareness of the sustainability issues of exhibiting and provide exhibitors ideas for improving the sustainability of their exhibiting process in the future.
Leonardo Academy continues to carry out emissions inventories for organizations such as Apogee and the International Monetary Fund.
Sustainable Building Services (LEED® Services)
The Sustainable Building Services Team is enthused to announce two recent LEED-EB Gold certifications for buildings located in Wisconsin (LaCrosse and Madison), and is anticipating another one in Washington, DC within the next couple of weeks. The team is continuing to work with several clients' on-going recertification efforts. An exciting project for the team will begin in 2012, consulting with a hospital to assess the sustainability of their building and operations.
In October Michael Arny attended the LEED Plaque Awards Ceremony in Washington, DC for two World Bank buildings that achieved LEED-EB O&M Gold Certification last July.

Leonardo Academy's Land Management Program and Valley Ridge Preserve
Edith and Deane Arny, donors of the Valley Ridge Preserve near Richland Center, Wisconsin, go for their weekly walk at the preserve.
It was a beautiful fall at Valley Ridge Preserve. Activities included removal of brambles, sumac and autumn olive from oak savannah restoration areas, brush from the edges and middle of open fields, and wind-fallen dead trees from trails. Ongoing projects include clearing small trees and brush from the shooting star and marsh marigolds sites to provide more light to these wildflowers and encourage their growth.
Sustainable Transportation Program
Leonardo Academy is proud to announce that we were recommended for three EPA Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) grants in September of 2011. Overall these grants allowed for Leonardo Academy to reduce emissions from diesel engines in Wisconsin, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas. This project focused on 107 diesel engines in marine vessels, stationary irrigation pumps, construction equipment, long-haul trucks and school buses. Reducing emissions from diesel engines is currently one of the most important air quality challenges facing the country.
Sustainability Standards Development
Leonardo Academy hosted the fall quarterly meeting of the multi-stakeholder Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee by webinar in October, completing the second of the three phases in the standard development process. The goal of the 2012 April Standards Committee Meeting, to be held in Washington, DC, is to review the draft standard. Visit the new website dedicated to the standard development process:
Two new Leonardo Academy standards became American National Standards with their approval from the American National Standards Institute: Emissions Inventories, Reduction Credits and Offsets (LEO-5000); and Sustainable Gaming (LEO-8000). Visit ww.leonardoacademy.org/services/standards
